Mexico. A dream holiday destination for oh so many, right? And as of August this year, I can safely confirm that it is indeed the stuff of laptop screensavers, holiday brochures and Hollywood movie scenes. Endless azure seascapes, soft crystal white sand, palm trees galore and a clear blue sky disturbed by nothing but the sunshine’s rays and the occasional baby cloud quickly passing by.
Having wanted to go to Mexico for years but sadly never having the funds, my boyfriend and I well and truly struck lucky when I won a competition with Virgin Holidays on Twitter, and after bouncing around the house and screaming down the phone to Damian with excitement, we had a 5 night stay booked at the All Inclusive Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa for August. Lucky is an understatement, I know.
Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa
After ten surprisingly short hours on the plane and a quick private transfer we found ourselves on the most beautiful resort I’ve seen. Surrounded by acres of lush landscaping and nestled in a tropical paradise, the hotel impressed us the minute we got out of our taxi. We were immediately presented with hand towels and champagne before being shown through the grand lobby whilst our suitcases were swiftly whisked to our room.
The check-in process was quick and simple, and all done with a glass of champagne in hand. After providing the necessary documents and receiving our keys, the receptionist provided us with a map and happily talked us through each of the restaurants, areas and facilities before we headed back out to the front of the resort to be whisked away in a golf cart to our room.
A spacious stay
Once we arrived, we found our suitcases waiting for us and was shown around our glorious room.
The first thing I noticed was just how bloody spacious the room was. We soon found spots to keep our suitcases for the week, and with wardrobes, drawers, bedside cabinets and a large desk, we certainly didn’t struggle for places to store our clothes, documents and whatever else we dragged along with us.
As soon as we were left to our own devices, I wanted nothing more than to jump like a starfish straight onto the enticing king-size bed and to see if it was just as comfortable as it looked. (Spoiler: it was, if not more so. 😍) But, being the good blogger I am, I refrained and grabbed some photos first.
I was impressed with how spacious the bathroom was too, complete with a walk in shower, a jacuzzi bath and a large sink and mirror. If you get to this hotel and realise you’ve forgotten toiletries, fear not! They had everything you could think of ready and waiting for us – body cream, shampoo, toothpaste, flannels, shower caps, cotton buds – you name it!
Having won our stay in a competition, Virgin Holidays booked it for us and we had no idea what room we would get. So imagine my delight when we stepped onto the patio and saw water right before us. That’s right: we had a swim-up room! We could step straight out into the water each and every morning if we pleased. The patio was finished off with a table and chair set along with a large hammock – something I’d never used before until this holiday!
By time we’d had a look around the room and freshened up, it was pretty late at night and so we got settled into bed (heaven, I swear) and ordered room service. What a way to start the week!
An abundance of food
When it came to eating at the resort, I was never worried about finding something I like. I’m notoriously an extremely fussy eater, and so my one worry when it comes to going All Inclusive is that I get to a hotel and struggle to find something to eat. I didn’t have this problem at Dreams Tulum.
The resort boasts nine restaurants featuring cuisines such as Italian, French, Mexican and Peruvian. Though we didn’t get chance to dine in them all, everywhere we did settle down for a bite to eat was clean and inviting, and our food was always brought over to our table quickly. My favourite restaurant was the Seaside Grill, which was situated right by the pool and overlooking the sea. It had an extensive menu and the staff were always more than happy to cater to my fussy eater needs.
Along with these restaurants were numerous bars around the hotel, including a smoothie bar which provided the perfect afternoon snack and a swim-up pool bar which served the most delightful cocktails. The bar staff were more than happy to fill up your glass as soon as they saw it empty and they definitely kept me well watered* throughout the day. (*Well champagned).
Taking a dip and going for a paddle
In between chilling out in the room, munching on grub and sipping cocktails, our days were spent around the various hotel pools and walking down the long, picturesque beach.
The main pool, pictured below, is where most of the action took place. Throughout the day there various aqua classes, and the swim-up bar meant no-one went thirsty. There were swings around the bar which made a perfect place to perch our bums and watch the world go by.
If you’re looking for a quieter spot to hang out, there’s also a smaller pool, aptly named the quiet pool. Both were surrounded by a vast amount of sun loungers and we never found ourselves struggling for a spot to settle down. Each pool was also cleaned daily and kept to a really high standard.
Considering that I usually avoid salt water and sand, and instead stick to chlorine and concrete, the fact that I spent more time walking along the golden beach and having a paddle in the endless sea speaks volumes about just how beautiful the beach at Dreams Tulum is. I can only describe it as breathtaking.
Looking like something straight from a postcard, the private beach stretched as far as the eye could see and was met by incredible clear sea water that drifted off into a shimmering blue expanse. Needless to say, I got immensely snap happy, but can you blame me?
Keeping busy and indulging
Staying in a spa resort, it would be a crime for me to not try out the health facilities. And by health facilities, I mean a cheeky massage. Whilst hanging out in the lobby bar one day, a lady from the spa approached me to let me know that they’d had a cancellation and so could offer me 30% discount. I know right – does the luck ever end?! And so I decided to treat myself to a 50 minute back massage.
When I arrived for my appointment, I was informed that I would be having a male do my treatment. I’ll admit, I panicked a bit at first. I’d only ever received massages from females! But as soon as I stepped into the room and got chatting to him, he made me feel incredibly at ease. And boy, did he give a good massage. I could have stayed there all day long.
After finishing my treatment and letting me relax for a little while, I was led out into the jacuzzi area where I was allowed to hang about for as long as I wished, sipping endless glasses of cucumber water and popping in and out of the sauna and steam room.
If a spa experience isn’t for you, Dreams Tulum hosts a number of other things you can get up to during your stay. There are various shops dotted around the resort selling everything from clothes to homeware and, of course, souvenirs which are perfect for taking home to your loved ones.
If sports is more your sort of thing, then you can head down to the tennis courts, take up some dance lessons, or swing by the beach to take part in various watersports throughout the day.
Me and Damian usually took it easy – a few games of giant checkers in the afternoon, a mooch around the little gift shops, and then back to our room to chill out in bed with a film. The TVs showed American channels and I got chance to watch a few films including Music & Lyrics, and Sex and the City: The Movie, though if there’s not much on during your stay, you can borrow DVDs from the hotel reception throughout your stay!
My trip to Mexico was my first real taste of a luxury resort, and I’m gutted I didn’t do it sooner. I truly left all my worries and cares behind at Gatwick airport and spent the week taking it easy, being pampered and indulging in unlimited luxury, all whilst getting a tan. What more could you want?!
I’ll definitely be looking to return to Mexico, and will probably find myself going straight back to Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa. I couldn’t fault it, so why fix what isn’t broken, right? Prices start at $169.50 a night for the Deluxe Garden View, or if you really want to splash out, you can check out the Preferred Club Hacienda Suite which starts at $355.50 a night.
Is Mexico on your bucket list? Have you been before? 🙂
